The Australia Papua New Guinea Business Council is an independent association of businesses based in Australia and Papua New Guinea with an interest in the bilateral business relationship. Its members including major mining, banking, agricultural and service investors in Papua New Guinea, as well as smaller companies including traders.
The Australia Papua New Guinea Business Council is an independent association of businesses based in Australia which either invest in or trade with Papua New Guinea.  Its members including major mining, banking, agricultural and service investors in Papua New Guinea, as well as smaller companies.

The established in 1980 by Australian companies to create an organisation which would keep members informed about business opportunities and business conditions in Papua New Guinea and would represent their interests to governments in Australia and Papua New Guinea.

The Council seeks to represent members’ interests on a range of issues such as foreign investment guidelines, trade, migration criteria, professional and commercial services, law and order, aid, plus agreements between Australia and Papua New Guinea where a commercial element is involved.

Each year the Council arranges an annual bilateral business conference (the Australia Papua New Guinea Business Forum) attended by senior business people and government representatives from Australia and Papua New Guinea at which major issues affecting business are discussed.

The Council has close relationships with key Australian government ministers and agencies involved in the relationship with Papua New Guinea.  Senior Council representatives meet at least annually but often bi-annually with the Australian Foreign Minister

With the Business Council of Papua New Guinea, the Council meets with Australian and Papua New Guinea government ministers at the annual Australia Papua New Guinea Business Forum to discuss issues of concern to business.

The Council’s PNG Branch participates in various working groups in Papua New Guinea aimed at improving the business enabling environment there.

Mission

The Council exists to provide a framework within which the private sector can communicate with governments at the highest levels (politically and with the bureaucracy) with a view to finding solutions to trade and investment issues involving the two countries and individual members.

It also exists to provide members with a network to help further their business goals in Papua New Guinea.

Objectives

The Council has a Constitution, which sets out the objectives as follows:
To promote friendship, goodwill and understanding between the business communities of Australia and Papua New Guinea.
To maintain, support, promote and encourage trade, investment, technical and economic co-operation and tourism between Australia and Papua New Guinea.
To maintain, promote and extend industrial and commercial relations between individuals, firms, companies, corporations, institutions and associations of Australia and Papua New Guinea.
monthly newsletter containing newspaper clippings and other items of interest to members.  The newsletter concentrates on business news, matters of commercial interest generally, political and economic events in which members are interested. Articles of special interest are incorporated within the newsletter.
