CARING FOR YOUR LAWN

A new lawn should be developed on a suitable soil profile. Most building sites will require improvement as building activity either destroys the existing profile through compaction or adds unsuitable materials to the natural soil surface e.g., sub-soil clay. Information and materials for improvement of soil profiles is readily available from landscaping centers.

After placement all turfgrasses need maintenance to ensure survival initially and then development of the lawn.
This is not an instantaneous process.

GRASSCO Pty Ltd supplies WINTERGREEN turfgrass in a hardened state; i.e. the turfgrass product possesses adequate food and nutrient reserves (carbohydrates etc.) to ensure initial development of a root system. Once laid, the turfgrass requires sufficient water to wet and soften the soil profile and encourage deep root system development.

FERTILISER
Fertiliser is not normally required until the root system is established and the lawn begins to develop (stolons and rhizomes spread and new leaves form).

Apply Dynamic Lifter at 5kg per 100 sq metres (or alternatively INCITEC ECO 88) to assist lawn development, and then when established in September, December and March.
Provide additional nitrogen by fertilizing with UREA in November, January and April.

Fertiliser is not required in winter as the turfgrass is less active. Lawn colour will improve with fertilizer application, however colour may lighten in cold weather. Leaf testing can be used to monitor plant health, and to indicate corrective action for best growth.

MOWING
Initially the lawn should be mowed high to prevent removal of the turfgrass crown, which is required for photothynsesis and production of substrate and food for the developing lawn. Over time the mowing height can be reduced slowly to improve the lawn's appearance. When the lawn is developed, management changes.

September: The lawn should be scalped to within 25mm of ground level in September, then increase your mowing height slightly through summer.

Autumn: Maintain the lawn at its longest length through autumn to produce the maximum amount of food production and storage for the winter dormancy period, and to enable quick recovery when growth recommences in spring.

The best mower is a "reel" or cylinder type. This mower cuts the leaf blades cleanly and reduces incidence of fungal disease. Other mower types will provide an adequate finish, however their blades must be sharp.

WATERING
Apply irrigation to wet the soil deeply and evenly, and to avoid run-off. Avoid frequent light applications as a shallow root system will develop, and the lawn will not tolerate dry conditions.

PESTS
Sudden changes in the lawn's appearance may indicate pest or disease pressure. Treatment should begin as early as possible. A well developed and maintained WINTERGREEN lawn will be less subject to pests, and will recover more rapidly from their effects. Contact GRASSCO, local nurseries or garden centers for advice on treatment.
