Bachmann Plant Hire Pty Ltd

Lloyd Bachmann

We have a proud record of over 50 years of service in the civil construction industry in South East Queensland. Company founder, Lloyd Bachmann, bought his first truck in July 1958, a Bedford for 750 pounds with work, carting clay and pit props for the mines. When work began on the Swanbank Power Station, Lloyd took a gamble in buying a backhoe. The fact he didn't know how to operate it didn't daunt him and he spent many hours practicing so that he could at least look proficient!

L & D Bachmann Plant Hire was formed in 1965 with a fleet consisting of that backhoe and a truck with Lloyd employing his first operator. Much of the work in this era was on various projects in and around Ipswich, with a lot of equipment being supplied on hourly hire to the Ipswich City Council and PMG (the predecessor of Telstra).

The business originally operated from the family home in One Mile, Ipswich, and in 1980, Lloyd purchased a depot site at Darling Street, West Ipswich. It was at this time, with Lloyd struggling to manage both the business and equipment repairs, that his son Greg joined the company having completed his apprenticeship as a Diesel Fitter.

During these years, the company carried out earthworks for the construction of Borallan Prison, the redevelopment of Brothers Leagues Club in Ipswich, the construction of the Ipswich Grammar School sports ovals, civil works for most stages of the West Moreton Anglican College and earthworks for large property developments in south east Queensland.

In 1992, with the business continuing to grow, the depot was relocated to it's present site at Turley Street, West Ipswich. By this time, Greg was managing the business although Lloyd was still actively involved. 1998 saw further expansion when Greg bought Brassall Earthmovers, a local civil construction company. This acquisition effectively doubled the size of the staff to 50 and the fleet of equipment and vehicles to 85. Greg saw the benefits to be gained with the use of technology in the industry and was an early advocate for the use of GPS.

From these humble beginnings to the present day, Bachmann Plant Hire Pty Ltd now employs over 100 professionals and has a fleet of over 200 machines and vehicles. Sadly in 2007, we lost the founder of this family company when Lloyd passed away, but the work that he began and his enduring legacy goes on.
