Spectronics was founded in Brisbane in 1985 by Michael O’Leary, Managing Director of Spectronics. At the time, Michael was working as an occupational therapist, applying technology options to assist people with cerebral palsy and spinal cord injury to achieve their goals. He was frustrated by the limited availability in Australia of the many new technologies emerging overseas. He saw the establishment of a company such as Spectronics as a means of improving the supply of, and support for these exciting new products. Today Spectronics is Australia’s largest supplier of special needs software and assistive technologies. We prefer to think of our range as “inclusive learning technologies”, being those technologies which foster real success and real inclusion in educational or community-based settings (hence the company name Inclusive Learning Technologies Pty Ltd). We work closely with a wide network of professionals and technology users – reflecting our commitment to providing quality support to both education and disability groups throughout Australia, New Zealand and South East Asia. Spectronics is proud to have been appointed the exclusive importer for a number of technology companies from around the globe, or for specific assistive technologies from within their range. These companies include: Don Johnston Inc This is an external link Widgit Software Limited This is an external link Texthelp Ltd This is an external link Mayer-Johnson This is an external link We also import technologies directly from the following overseas companies: AbleNet This is an external link Attainment Company This is an external link Crick Software This is an external link Inclusive Technology This is an external link Penfriend Ltd This is an external link Unique Perspectives Limited This is an external link White Space Ltd This is an external link and many more… What is the benefit to you of working with the direct importer? We are able to pass on to you any information about new developments or support materials as they happen – because we are in direct contact with each of these companies. We are also able to communicate with them directly on your behalf about technical support issues and we are often equipped with spares and replacement units, enabling Spectronics to quickly repair or upgrade hardware for you at our Brisbane (Australia) office. Another longer term benefit to you is that through our direct relationship with these companies, we are able to provide guidance to their product designers and software developers about the specific needs of users of their technologies here in Australia. We always welcome feedback and suggestions for improvements in any of the products which we sell. We do pass these comments on to our suppliers regularly. Spectronics has advised several companies about Australian needs resulting in the following developments: Australian/New Zealand Version of Boardmaker Australian/New Zealand Version of Clicker 6 Australian Version of Writing with Symbols 2000 Australian and New Zealand Widgit symbols for Australian and New Zealand Version of Communicate: SymWriter 2 ANZ and Communicate in Print 2 ANZ (Work in progress) Australian homophones within Texthelp Read&Write GOLD Downloadable Australian Topic Dictionaries for Co:Writer In recent years, the growth of interest in the technologies supplied by Spectronics has been particularly strong in the education area – in regular education (non-special education) classrooms, as well as in special education centres. This recent trend is exciting on two fronts. Regular education classroom teachers have access to flexible, motivating early literacy and numeracy solutions for their students. Students with disabilities and/or learning difficulties are able to be included in many more regular ed classroom activities. Spectronics is proud to be playing a part in this development.
