ABOUT our surroundings Queensland's Granite Belt is a unique elevated plateau (800m-100m above sea level) with cold winter temperatures down to -10 degrees C in 2006, and mean summer January temperatures averaging 20.1degrees C. This is a climatic temperature range very similar to Australia's best wine districts. The natural environment is ruggedly beautiful abounding in granite boulders. A host of mountainous ranges spring from the valley floor. Elevations of vineyards scattered around the district vary from 680 m at Ballandean to 850 m at our Balancing Boulder Vineyard, making it one of the highest commercial vineyards in Australia. This variation makes for considerable microclimatic variation between vineyard sites and differences in wine quality. Kominos Wines is located amidst a fruit bowl of temperate fruit orchards and vegetable fields .Our wine grape vineyards are surrounded by other vineyards and orchards, growing an array of delicious apples, pears, apricots, plums, peaches, nectarines, raspberries and healthy vegetables- broccoli, cabbages, leeks, garlic in winter and tomatoes, capsicums, zucchini in summer. The Granite Belt is a veritable garden of Eden. There is no similar or better region in our tropical /subtropical state for visiting and experiencing an authentic production experience. WHO are we? Tony and Mary Comino grow grapes on 30 acres of vineyards. Together they handcraft and sell their wines on site in their landmarkAustraliana winery. "Our customers love the immediate connection between the grapes we tend just metres away from thecellar door and the wines we taste at the winery" says Mary."As winemakers who grow our own grapes, we are always able to take greater care with growing (sometimes a little obsessively) and take greater risks with ripening than many makers who purchase grapes in " comments Tony Comino. We won four trophies in 2006 including Best Cabernet Sauvignon at the National Cool Climate Wine Show "Our 2006 Trophy for Most successful Queensland Exhibitor at the Royal National Wine Show and 2006 Trophy for Most successful Queensland Exhibitor at the Australian Small Winemaker's Show at the Queensland College of Wine Tourism along with the many wine show medals awarded this year confirm our faith in our unique vineyard sites and region . The wines we produce are a complementary blend of Mary's business and promotional experience with Tony's viticultural and winemaking experience. . WHY are we on the GRANITE BELT? The Granite Belt with its high elevation, experiences cool slow ripening summers which more than any other factor leads to high flavor accumulation in wine grape berries. There has been a great deal of scientific work done particularly in California identifying the best locations for establishing vineyards and all the major indicators point to the potential success of our region. In 1996-97 a major flavor survey was conducted of 2500 vineyard samples from around Australia using the world's first major test, developed for flavour measurement ( by Australia) -the G-G-Assay. The G-G Assay survey confirmed some of the highest Australian flavor levels in granite belt Semillon and Shiraz. This year 2006 our major wine show awards reinforce the scientific predictions. Kominos pointed the highest marks for Merlot at the Cairns Wine Show with a 2005 Estate Merlot And the second highest commercial Merlot with our 2005 Winemakers Reserve at the Brisbane RNA wine show(over 3000 exhibits) Please check Awards section for details of our Gold and Silver and Bronze awards this year. The granite belt's shallow soils also add to the area's suitability as not only Queensland's best but among Australia's best suited Premium Wine Districts. Within the Granite Belt elevations vary from 680m at the warmer Ballandean end of the district to 875m on our Balancing Boulder Vineyard. Within the area some vineyard sites have extra beneficial attributes ehanccing their suitability. Both our Balancing Boulder Ambeli (vineyard) and Highway vineyards have northeasterly slopes without long western sun exposure allowing better vineyard cooling.
