The development of Creative Short Courses at ekto23 was brought about from experiences working in corporate environments, freelancing to businesses and teaching. At ekto23 Shar Try runs creative courses on the Gold Coast, specialising in visual art, media and design. Shar has personally taught these courses at university and schools so you can now learn creative skills either at your place of work or in a small studio environment. Students learn through a range of hands-on, practical activities to develop creative thinking processes. Small class sizes of only three to four people enable individual attention focused on the needs of the student. If you are looking for a flexible and enjoyable learning environment brought to you by a teacher with both education and design industry experience then ekto23 has got a course for you.

In the corporate environment

When I worked in the position of inhouse creative, it was assumed that whatever I was doing it was fun.  I may have been at work and quite often doing repetitive tasks but there were colours on my screens, I listened to music and I could take time to have a laugh. Often my coworkers would come to visit my corner and sometimes they would have a go at driving my computer.  The best times were when we would brainstorm and allow our minds to flow, generating new and interesting ideas about the business.  This free brain activity in the corporate environment was often touted as being something that should be used more and developed.  What I wanted to do in professional development activities with my team was get creative, we were good at it and we enjoyed it. So now I have developed workshops and courses for developing the creativity within the corporate team.

Whilst working with small business owners and marketers

I recognised that simple changes to designs were costing too much money.  Updates of printed flyers and advertisements or updates to a website needed to be made and calling in the designer to make these small changes was inefficient – often the time to communicate the changes was more than making the change itself.  I decided that the knowledge I have in driving design software could be taught and control passed on to the business owner and manager.  It is not to undermine the role of the designer, they exist to spend time creating and developing concepts and solutions for the business.  Knowledge of these design software applications smooth the stumbling blocks  for communication between business owners and designers by bringing about a greater understanding of the work a designer does and the limitations they are working within.

Whilst working in education

I discovered that many teachers struggle with Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and integrating ICT into learning experiences for their students.  In the areas of Graphics, Visual Arts, Film, Television and New Media students are learning to express themselves using the available technologies around them.  Teachers who keep up with these technologies and ‘learn how to learn' new technologies are better able to integrate ICT in meaningful ways and concentrate on developing creative, inquiring minds without the frustration of computer-rage.

. A few calls

from parents with children wanting to learn creative software, from the locals wanting to learn how to make cool stuff for fun, from retirees wanting to keep active and learn and from professionals looking to develop their skills . I started to write my course outlines. I have set up my studio to run drawing classes and some of the video classes, and I have set up a small computer lab with iMacs and a projector.  I can set up onsite at a booked location and bring the class to you. It is a simple set up but can be very flexible.  I plan to have fun in the most serious of ways and look forward to meeting new people, sharing in creative adventures.
