The Wet Tropics World Heritage Area is a landscape as old as time itself. The Wet Tropics of Queensland World Heritage Area was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1988 by UNESCO for its internationally recognised Outstanding Universal Value. The Wet Tropics Management Authority protects, conserves and promotes sustainable use of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area through strong partnerships with community, industry and Rainforest Aboriginal people for the enrichment of all.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation’s (UNESCO) recognition and World Heritage listing of Queensland’s Wet Tropics as an area of outstanding universal value, galvanized the Australian and Queensland governments to set in place a comprehensive management framework to ensure its protection for future generations.
A regional commitment...
A cornerstone to success of the management framework is on-ground coordination and management that unites regional communities, local land owners, regional councils, tourism and business sectors and Rainforest Aboriginal people in a supportive and collaborative effort.

The Wet Tropics Management Authority was established under the Wet Tropics World Heritage Protection and Management Act1993 to provide leadership, facilitation, advocacy and guidance in the management and presentation of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area in support of the management framework. Based in Cairns, the Wet Tropics Management Authority is comprised of a dedicated team of around 20 scientists, planners and outreach specialists that focus on building networks in the wet tropics region.

The diverse and complex wet tropics landscapes has provided a unique opportunity for scientific research to grow our understanding of the World Heritage Area. We actively encourage and support recognition and use of the World Heritage Area as a learning landscape.
