All the t's must be crossed, the i's dotted and the boxes ticked before you order one extra piece of furniture. SPACE + LIGHTING + COLOUR = BALANCE Today, choosing the right elements to design and decorate a modern home requires strict adherence to some basic but essential rules. Clients often begin the project by wanting to talk about colour. As the design element that elicits the most passion, colour is also where most fear to go and they will feel quite stressed until those scary decisions are out of the way. Like all things unknown, once you tame this particular beast, a new and exciting design cosmos opens up to you. First we must work our way through the design development to create a three dimensional canvas with which to work. There is no point in waving colour charts around if you have not carefully planned where each highlight or backdrop needs to be used and its purpose in the whole scheme of things. Colour of course is extremely important for the final result to be perfect but prior to the actual selections being made we have number of crucial design steps to take to set the stage. And a stage is exactly what we are creating, because an inspiring home is all about drama, excitement, living art, visual enjoyment, and a special kind of comfort that is all about the most important end result – balance. This is truly the essential ingredient to excellent design and it is created by a combination of well planned steps. Your aim should be to invigorate the observer – each area more interesting than the last, drawing you through the home until finally they arrive at your finest creation, an even more exciting and exotic space where they can join you to enjoy some time together. Even before you have offered them refreshments they should be making soothing and happy murmuring noises about the marvellous environment you have created for them. They feel safe, soothed and yet thrilled with their surroundings. And so, before I will even discuss colour we begin by dividing the project into “living” spaces. Those spaces we intend to share with others, where we will entertain our friends – and those spaces where we will spend time alone either working or relaxing. Most importantly we will take a long and thoughtful look at those areas to be enjoyed at night and spaces where no décor or furnishing pieces need be included to create interest. As a designer, I look at the connection between interior space and exterior space and the different times of the day or night that these spaces will be used. I strive towards a subtle flow, removing unnecessary walls and opening up visual experiences. No walking into the ends of wardrobes unless they have been transformed into an interesting niche for lighting or art or books. And no long hallways without rewards both along the way and at the extreme. Every corner you turn should present you with a new and exciting experience – using simple slices through long hallway walls, inserting channelled slots in ceilings that allow you to create imaginative lighting effects and working with diverse elements such as glass, raw concrete, textured stone, metallic paint finishes and blocks of colour. Interesting variations in floor finishes or simply a change in floor level can also create drama, stepping up to a backlit platform or down into an intimate space with subtle lighting from beneath the furnishings. This simple ploy will immediately create yet another visual diversion to be enjoyed. Once you have spent quality time reviewing your flow of spaces, the lighting plan can enhance each and every effect, casting shadows, interesting shapes and even exotic niches that become in themselves art simply by the use of a 12 volt 50w dichroic halegen rainbow filter lamp (available in blue, red, or green rather than standard clear) Nothing really, and yet the final effect is wonderful. Stimulating. Who would want to create a living space that was dull, unimaginative and uninviting. WHAT YOU REALLY WANT TO READ ABOUT – COLOUR So, having read all that, what you really want to know about is how to use colour. I always consider colour in terms of strength – no two people will ever adore the same colour and I doubt if they even see it in exactly the same way for the way in which each of us views colour is unique. What we all appreciate in exactly the same way is the balance you can achieve with colour combinations. For example, on an exterior scheme, the perimeter fencing would be the deepest shade, for it will field bright flowers and greenery. The structure would be one medium shade (treat the building rather like a block with various attachments). Features and trims would highlight both deep and medium shades (rather like eye makeup or jewellery and so it can be sharp and crisp – very dark or very light) We then consider the roof. A large expansive metal roof would in most cases be light – the colorbond range caters for this with a wonderful selection with matching fascias and gutters from off white (surfmist) through a great spectrum of smokey greys and greiges. What most people don't realise is that you can have the exact match produced in house paint – off white, with off white with cedar, how nice is that. Colour goes hand in hand with light – use one basic colour as your complete backdrop or cover, rather like face makeup. Have you created a totally uniform canvas? Not at all for now you begin to see depth, shadow, light and within your monochromatic scheme you actually have created tone as a result of the light and shadows. Just one single colour is now five or six. Combine these colour tones with other finishes such as timber, stone or glass and you begin to see a whole new canvas emerging. Feature colours should provide drama and depth. Use two or three colours rather than just one. Also, for maximum effect, work with an almost flat paint such as Zylone 20 which is only 3% gloss and created in a myriad of colours by Resene . If you have colour selection block, working with art pieces can be an excellent prompt when you are stuck for ideas. Fabrics are always an inspiration for combining colours that, fantastically, work together when you would least imagine. Or fruit – think rockmelon – the texture, the balance. Or flowers – or tigers – or tropical fish – nature lends us a million colour ideas with combinations that are so perfect and so in tune with each other. Don't be afraid of colour, there are books of rules that no brilliantly coloured butterfly ever had the opportunity to read. If you have never had the courage to create a wonderfully outrageous room for yourself just visit a Resene customer showroom and confess that you are ready to fly into the unknown and would like a hand. For example, on an exterior scheme, the perimeter fencing would be the deepest shade, for it will field bright flowers and greenery. The structure would be one medium shade (treat the building rather like a block with various attachments).
