Dr Brent McMonagle is an ENT surgeon based on the Gold Coast. He has been treating children and adults with disorders affecting the ear, nose, throat, neck, and skullbase regions since 2007. This practice has state of the art diagnostic equipment, and offers the very latest in the prevention and treatment of ENT related conditions.
Dr McMonagle was born on the Gold Coast (actually in Pindara Hospital), and educated at The Southport School, graduating from the University of Queensland Medical School in 1996. He underwent advanced surgical training in ENT surgery at Royal Children’s Hospital, Ipswich Hospital, Royal Brisbane Hospital, and Princess Alexandra Hospital, receiving his surgical fellowship in 2004. Brent then undertook additional training in Sydney (St Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney Children’s Hospital), London (Guys and St Thomas’ Hospitals, The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery Queen Square and King’s College Hospital) and Adelaide (Royal Adelaide Hospital, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Flinders Medical Centre) in the areas of advanced ear surgery, cochlear implantation, lateral skullbase surgery, paediatric ENT surgery, advanced sinus surgery, and endoscopic skullbase surgery.

Brent has established a bone anchored hearing aid (Baha) and cochlear implant program on the Gold Coast. He performed the first Baha operation on the Gold Coast in 2008, and the first cochlear implant in 2010. He also introduced image guidance surgery for endoscopic sinus and skullbase surgery to the Gold Coast in 2007. He was a founding member of the Gold Coast Hospital Head and Neck Cancer Clinic.

Dr McMonagle has strong basic science and research interests. He has completed a PhD thesis on Olfactory Ensheathing Cells and Stem Cells in Nerve Repair and Regeneration through the Eskitis Institute, Griffith University under Prof Alan Mackay-Sim. This work has involved developing alternative methods of peripheral nerve repair using unique nerve cells from the nose. This same technology has led to applications in neurological disease, stem cell regeneration therapies, and the human spinal cord injury trial at Princess Alexandra Hospital. Dr McMonagle is also involved in research into otitis media and olfactory changes in multiple sclerosis. He has published numerous articles on basic science and clinical research, book chapters, and presented both nationally and internationally.

Dr Brent McMonagle is a senior lecturer at Griffith University and Bond University Medical Schools. Brent is a founding member of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Academy of Surgical Educators. He regularly lectures general practitioners, ENT registrars, medical students, nurses, and audiologists. He is also the scientific director of the Perry Cross Spinal Research Foundation, which aims to “Cure paralysis for all” through fund raising initiatives to support research funding in spinal cord regeneration.
