The Migration Institute of Australia (MIA) is the professional association for Australian migration service providers worldwide, working together for the benefit of Australia.
The Migration Institute of Australia was established in 1992 and is the peak membership organisation representing Registered Migration Agents.
It is represented in all States and Territories in Australia and has an overseas Chapter based in London. Its membership comprises some of Australia's most eminent registered migration agents and migration lawyers both in Australia and internationally.
The Migration Institute of Australia is a not-for-profit unlisted public company limited by guarantee and does not have any share capital. It is governed by a Board of Directors and operates under a Constitution and strict Corporate Governance Board Charter. It publishes, as required by the Corporations Act, an Annual Report, which provides a full public disclosure of its activities and finances. The MIA's financial accounts are audited annually.
The MIA is a member of Professions Australia. Other members of Professions Australia include the Australian Dental Association, CPA Australia, the Institute of Chartered Accountants, the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, Engineers Australia and the Institute of Public Accountants. In order to belong to Professions Australia members must abide by strict accreditation requirements and ethical standards.
All MIA members must meet strict requirements, they must firstly be nominated and seconded by a Member, probity checks are then carried out, applications are then referred to a Membership Committee which is finally approved by the Board of Directors. MIA members must abide by a Code of Ethics and Practice in order to join the Institute. The MIA derives its income from membership subscriptions, Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses and sponsorship from highly reputable companies such as Medibank, Westpac, LEAP Migration Professionals, Western Union, IELTS, Fenton Green, Lexis Nexis and others.
The MIA exists to support its Members by providing information on legislative changes, mentoring and networking opportunities, assistance with difficult cases, a Members' Forum (with over 100,000 postings), free travel insurance and benefits from its sponsors. Our members look forward to receiving weekly e-newsletters from the MIA.
In recognition of its importance as the peak professional association, the 2013 Annual Conference of the MIA was opened by both the Minister for Immigration and Border Protection, the Hon. Scott Morrison, MP and the Assistant Minister for Immigration & Border Protection, Senator Michaelia Cash. It was also attended by the newly appointed Opposition Minister for Immigration, Richard Marles who had only been sworn in less than 72 hours earlier.
The MIA Members can attain additional professional status by completing rigorous courses and assessments to become Associate Fellows and Fellows of the Institute.
The MIA stands for the highest professional standards in its dealings with its stakeholders such as Federal and State Governments, Ministers, the Department of Immigration and Border Protection, skills assessing authorities and its fellow stakeholder, the Law Council of Australia, with whom it regularly liaises with the Department of Immigration and Border Protection, and many of whose members are also members of the Institute.
Angela Chan FMIA is the MIA's current National President and Kevin Lane FMIA is its Chief Operating Officer.
Our vision is for a society where migration to Australia is valued and
the professionalism of MIA Members is recognised by all stakeholders.
